The AMAs were stripped down with no audience except for a few fans in the mezzanine of the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday night. Those in attendance wore masks, were tested prior to the awards, and practiced social distancing.
Parts of the AMAs were pre-recorded while there were live performances from several artists including Katy Perry, The Weeknd, Dua Lipa, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, Jennifer Lopez, Maluma, Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Elish, 24kGoldn and Iann Dior BTS, Bad Bunny, Lewis Capaldi, Machine Gun Kelly, Lil Baby, Bell Biv DeVoe, and Nelly, who performed songs from his diamond-certified album, Country Grammar, which turns 20 this year.
Taylor Swift took home the big prize of Artist of the Year as well as favorite pop/rock female artist, and favorite music video for “Cardigan.” The singer accepted her award from the studio where she was re-recording her hit songs that were bought and sold by Scooter Braun.
The Weeknd picked up three awards including Favorite Soul/R&B Artist, Song, and Album. He also continued with the beat-up and bruised character he’s portrayed in his music videos as he performed on a bridge complete with fireworks and Kenny G assisting him on sax.
