Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) to Host 10th Anniversary
Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K on April 26
Thousands of walkers and runners will make strides in the ongoing fight against drunk driving during the 10th Anniversary Ultimate Software presents the UBS Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5k brought to you by Memorial Healthcare System on Sunday, April 26. This event is MADD Broward County’s annual signature fundraising event in support of its mission to end drunk driving. Walk Like MADD events take place in over 90 cities across the U.S., including Fort Lauderdale.
The day’s festivities will also include children’s activities, an awards ceremony, live musical performances and vendor/educational booths. The event will be attended by dignitaries including Founder and Volunteer Chairperson Heather Geronemus, MADD CEO Adam Vanek, and honorary chairs Matthew ‘Whiz’ Buckley and Major Robert Chandler.
Since it was established in 2011, this event has raised over $2 million that stays in our community to save lives and support victims of drunk driving, making it the most successful grassroots fundraiser in the history of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. All event proceeds benefit MADD Broward & Palm Beach’s community education, victim support services and youth programs.
“Drunk driving is still the largest traffic safety crisis in America and this event helps raise awareness and funds so that we can see a future with no more victims,” said Geronemus, who established and chaired the Fort Lauderdale event since 2011. Her late father, Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2009. “We are thankful for this community that has supported Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5k over the past ten years.”

Founded by a mother whose daughter was killed by a drunk driver, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is the nation’s largest nonprofit working to protect families from drunk driving and underage drinking. MADD also supports drunk and drugged driving victims and survivors at no charge, serving one person every nine minutes through local MADD victim advocates and at 1-877-MADD-HELP. In South Florida, the chapter’s annual Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K has raised more than $2 million since 2011. MADD’s Broward and Palm Beach chapters facilitate hundreds of free events each year to educate youth and parents on the dangers and consequences of impaired driving.
