Sandy Hook Parents Release Public Service Commercial

A group of parents who lost children in the Sandy Hook elementary school massacre has produced a TV commercial to show kids how to defend themselves when facing an active shooter.

Released on Wednesday, the public service announcement shows happy students arriving at school — only to find a gunman is on the property. “My parents got me this skateboard I wanted; it’s pretty cool,” one kid says as he uses the skateboard to break a window so he can escape. Another scene shows students grouped around an art room door, ready to defend themselves with scissors and colored pencils. And in another, a student says, “These new socks can be a real lifesaver,” just before she uses them as a tourniquet on an injured classmate.
While the video may be disturbing, one Sandy Hook parent says the blunt approach is necessary to get their point across. “We don’t want people to turn away from it, so pretending it doesn’t exist is not helping to solve it,” says Nicole Hockley, who lost her 6-year-old son Dylan in the December 2012 tragedy.
